Hello fellows! If you have been reading up recently, you would have noticed the results for the O Level Examination is out. Some cried, some cried (with joy) too. But some outrageously claims that their 7As were achieved because of their undying passion and idolism for K-pop!
Click here to read the article itself.
Do you see the problem here? No? Let me enlighten you.
1) Teenagers should not list k-pop as one of the reasons behind their success.
2) Teenagers brag that they managed to achieve A1 even though they woke up at 5 to watch K-pop videos when their written paper starts at 9.
3) The article seems to be implying that K-pop should be widely accepted since it helps one in his/her studies.
Tuition, notes, lectures, encouragement from parents and peers, all these were not mentioned and almost as if they were not the important factors behind the feat of achieving 7As in a National Examination. Instead K-pop was claimed to have "helped relieve stress" and helped improve concentration. K-pop in this case is nothing more than another alternative to relieve stress. Its effect is the same as strolling in a park, watching television programs or simply listening to music. So why is it that both the article and the girls are talking about K-pop as though it was the most important factor?
Teenagers should focus more on their studies. Waking up at 5 just to watch videos is ridiculous. It is even more preposterous when the examination starts at 9. Worst still, the teenage girl firmly believed what she did was right and even bragged that she managed to ace the paper she sat for that day.
So this article was written in a way it implies that K-pop helps one in his/her studies. I beg to differ. K-pop was thought to be just like any other trends that will affect one's studies. The 7As merely proved that trends can be followed without having academics being affected. It does not help at all. There is a difference between deteriorate, improve and neutral. That girl's above average results merely proved that K-pop does not cost one's academics but neither will it improve one's result.
A few things for you to ponder:
1) Even without K-pop, will that girl still get her 7As? Do note that it was hard work that got her the 7As and not music videos.
2) Is this what a teenage girl should do; waking up at 5 just to watch videos? So what if she managed to get an A1 for that subject? Such attitudes and actions are wrong for a student. Academics should not be used an a justification.
3)Teenage girls going crazy for their idols, spending hundreds of dollars for concert tickets...right or wrong? Have they started earning their own money? Whose money are they using?
In the nutshell, I think that claiming K-pop helps student in their studies is an overstatement. I do agree that it can relieve stress, but it is just yet another alternative, nothing really special. Teenage girls should draw a line in idolism, especially in K-pop. Waking up at 5, spending hundreds of dollars and using their A1s as justification is wrong. This is definitely not a life style that is mentally healthy.
P.S: Showing that K-pop does not affect your studies is NOT a merit. It should not even have any influence on your studies in the first place. Hence, not affecting academics is what is expected. Do not brag about it until it really improves your grades.
PPS: To Sarah Swee, your 7As are there because of your hard work in these few years (When K-pop was not so sizzling hot). Try your strategy in Junior College and you are bound to fail unless you adopt measures and make amendments to your lifestyle. Just so you know, you have given another false image of K-pop, made more people go crazy over it and gave them the wrong idea about the relationship between K-pop and Academic
PPPS: Good luck to those ardent fans and aficionado of K-pop.
